LADIES WE LOVE | DJ Coco Robert

Posted: Jun 01 2015

Ladies We Love is a new inspirational interview series with amazing women from across the globe.
This week we had the pleasure of interviewing DJ Coco Robert...

She's a New York based DJ who has been spinning in cities from Beverly Hills to Buenos Aires since she began at just seventeen. When she's not on the decks Coco Robert can be found writing for VH1 and collaborating with other top brands.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO DJing?

I basically fell into it when I first moved to Manhattan after high school. I was introduced to an agency who offered to teach me the ropes and I fell in love with it.

WHAT HAS BEEN A HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER?

DJing the club SPACE in Florence, Italy on the night of my 21st birthday. I was surrounded by friends and amazing energy.

WHAT CAUSE DO YOU FEEL PASSIONATE ABOUT?

I recently had the opportunity to speak about working in music and media at a high school in Queens, and the experience really heightened my enthusiasm for youth empowerment. I might be fresh out of school myself, but I was amazed to see just how much they responded to the insight I do have to offer. To be able to provide anyone further motivation is an incredible thing.

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH?

My sister. We're a year apart and quite different but quite close. When we're together we can be ridiculously giggly and silly over nothing.

BEST SPLURGE?

Buying a Porsche in full at 20. I worked hard for it - and I'm pretty sure I started researching the car I wanted when I was 10. My ideal at that time was a fast blue or red convertible.

WHERE DO FAMILY AND FRIENDS FIT IN FOR YOU?

Family is number one for me, so once I catch up on sleep, a lot of my time off is spent visiting them in Connecticut. I may interact with a lot of people, but I have very few close friends. I tend to gravitate towards equally busy and work-oriented people so we usually clear our schedules for each other's events and try to plan time together in advance. We'll catch up with an afternoon of wandering in Manhattan and checking out an unfamiliar restaurant.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU?

Summer means a lot of travel for me. I'll be mostly back and forth between gigs in New York and the Hamptons, and then bouncing around Europe for a bit.

IF YOU COULD GIVE SOMEONE JUST ONE PIECE OF ADVICE WHAT WOULD IT BE?

The grass is always greener where you water it.
